{"id":72,"date":"2005-06-02T11:44:53","date_gmt":"2005-06-02T18:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jillcook.com\/blog\/?p=72"},"modified":"2005-06-02T11:44:53","modified_gmt":"2005-06-02T18:44:53","slug":"being-sick-is-no-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jillcook.com\/blog\/2005\/06\/02\/being-sick-is-no-fun\/","title":{"rendered":"Being Sick is No Fun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jillcook.com\/blog\/FCKeditor\/editor\/images\/smiley\/msn\/thumbs_down.gif\" alt=\"\"\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Thumbs down to being sick.<\/p>\n<p>It still baffles me that we have come up with so so SO many antibiotics (meaning, specifically, antibacterials) but the methods of fighting off viruses still eludes us.&nbsp; Sure, we&#8217;ve got some that reduce the suffering during a herpesvirus outbreak (acyclovir, gancyclovir, etc) and even a couple that, if used quickly enough, can shorten the misery of influenza virus infection (amantadine, zanamivir).&nbsp; And thankfully we&#8217;ve come up with a few medications that seem to stave off HIV for a while (the reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors).&nbsp; But why can&#8217;t we tackle the common cold?&nbsp; What about these coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know:&nbsp; <strong><font face=\"Comic Sans MS\" color=\"#00ff00\">&quot;They mutate!&quot;<\/font>&nbsp; <font face=\"Courier New\" color=\"#800080\">&quot;The antigens change!&quot;<\/font>&nbsp; <font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#0000ff\">&quot;We just can&#8217;t keep up!&quot;<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Viruses.&nbsp; Little capsules of genetic material without brains, without thought, without intent or purpose&#8230; just carrying out their hard-coded genetic instructions that just so happen to bring mighty humans to their knees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Thumbs down to being sick.
