Disc Golf in Aussie-land

We got wet-n-wild during 18 holes of disc golf at the John Bray park in Strathpine today. Jem told us about a disc golf course he saw in Queenstown (New Zealand) when he was there on holiday recently, but he didn’t have his discs with him! We’re making plans to meet up there sometime in the future to play… maybe we can do a world tour of disc golf!photo 1.JPGphoto 2.JPG

Sun State Roller Girls

I had my first practice with the Sun State Roller Girls (local Brisbane derby team) tonight and it was great! There was even a girl there wearing a Rat City shirt! Her sister had visited Seattle and picked up the shirt for her. Derby is really a small world!!!photo.JPG

Dr. Jill to the Rescue

I was at my skating practice last night when my medical skills were called upon… One of the other skaters had fallen and hurt her ankle, and the couple of people helping her had some first aid skills, but they were a little unsure of what to do. They were asking for a nurse, and I said “well, I’m a doctor, what do you need?”

So I examined her and came to the conclusion that I thought she had broken her ankle (specifically, her distal fibula) and she needed to go to an ER for X-rays and splinting/casting. She wasn’t feeling (or looking) that great (kind of shaky and pale… Hello, broken bone!) so we called for the paramedics to give her a temporary splint and transport her to a hospital. They said they didn’t think it was broken, and I just thought… “Well, I hope it’s not (for her sake) but I really think it is.” and off she went in the aid car.

This morning I stopped at Starbucks on my way to work and I saw another skater who had been helping out with her last night: “It’s a broken fibula.”

Ahhh, victory. (Though I am sad for her that it is actually broken.) 🙁

Makin’ Bacon Derby Camp

I did roller derby summer camp this past couple of months, and I learned how to skate from the actual Rat City Rollergirls! It was awesome fun, and I nearly made it onto their “Fresh Meat” team (for new-to-the-league skaters). Even though I didn’t make it on the team, I did make it ALL the way through the tryouts (through all 3 cuts) so I’m pretty proud of myself! I’ll be on wheels for the next few months, and I’ll try out again early next year.

Yakima River Float Trip

A.J., Shaquita, and I took a leisurely kayak float down the lower Yakima river yesterday (starting just outside Ellensburg at the Big Horn launch site and floating to Big Pines campground). It was sunny and beautiful with nice cool water, and the current was running fast enough so we didn’t have to paddle much if we didn’t want to. It was so much fun, and I’m hoping we can go again later this month!

Personal Best!

My bowling team is playing tonight, but I am working so I “pre-bowled” last week and my scores get submitted with the rest of the team tonight. I bowled so awesomely! I got my personal best: 159!!! Can you believe it? This is the photo that’s going to be shown around at the lanes tonight so everyone can see how happy I am about my score!

Sounders FC

I went to the Seattle Sounders vs. Houston Dynamo first-round playoff soccer game last night at Qwest Field with A.J., Heather, and Jeremiah and it was a lot of fun! We had seats in the center “Club Level” section and we were directly on the half line, so a great view. The seats are slightly padded, and have full backs, armrests, and cup holders… plus that whole section is completely under-cover, so if it had rained (which it didn’t) we would have stayed dry. We also had access to the “Club Level” concessions and eating areas, plus there was the FSN Lounge, only for the best-of-the-best seats, which we had. There was free food there all game with Shepherd’s Pie, quesadillas, lots of fresh fruit, cookies, soda, and coffee. That was pretty cool!!

The game itself was so-so. The Sounders didn’t seem to have the fire, and the refereeing was pretty terrible, even taking away a goal of ours on a bogus call. It ended in a zero-zero tie, and we head to Houston next week to play them again for the second of this 2-game series.

Overall a really fun night!!!

A Day at the Beach

We went down to Alki today for the SEAFAIR Pirates Landing and stayed to watch the pole vaulting competition. Pole vaulting just looks physically impossible, yet there they are doing it mere feet from me!
