Another NICU Night

So here I sit in the NICU at the University of Washington again… I remember sitting here about a year ago as an intern – taking care of babies, getting ready for my intern retreat, hoping to be able to try out my procedure skills…

And now I’m back. I’m a senior resident now, helping my interns to take care of their babies, getting ready for their intern retreat… and still hoping to be able to try out my procedure skills – which I got to do the other day!

I intubated a 27-week gestational age baby on my second try.  I knew I wasn’t in on the first, but everyone said “Oh, I think you’re there. Let’s try it.”  I told them, no, I wasn’t in the trachea, but we tried anyway and, sure enough, I wasn’t.  So I tried again, and saw the tube go perfectly through the cords… and guess what happens?  “Are you sure you’re in? I don’t think you’re there.”  But I made them try it anyway, and – lo and behold – I was in (just like I knew I was).  :)  That was a completely rewarding moment.

And tonight has been quite an eventful night as well… I’ve had to transfer 2 kiddos over to Children’s because of deteriorating status. That sentence makes it sound so easy – but there’s so much work that goes into it, not to mention all of the work trying to stabilize the kids before making the decision to transfer.  It has been quite a busy afternoon, but it seems that the night might be a bit quieter.

Here’s to hoping for some sleep!

Pez People in the House!

I earned a “Hello Kitty” pez dispenser at work today. How does one go about earning such a thing you may ask? One simply performs a lumbar puncture that produces pristine looking spinal fluid, that, when the lab reports back, has only a single red blood cell. That’s how.
A near-champagne tap, near enough to earn me a prize. 🙂

My Call Room

This is my call room at Children’s. I have a bed, desk, phone, computer, and mirror. It’s actually quite a nice and comfy little room; great for getting some work done… And maybe catching an hour or two of sleep if the night is going well.

Happy Doctor’s Day!

This past Friday (March 30th) was National Doctors’ Day.  We got some cookies and heart shaped chocolates.  I thought it was just a Children’s Hospital thing, but then I learned that it’s actually a nationally recognized day, always on March 30th.

The history of Doctors’ Day – The first Doctors’ Day observance was March 30, 1933, in Winder, GA. The idea came from Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Cha Almond, and the date was the anniversary of the first use of general anesthetic in surgery. (On March 30, 1842, Dr. Crawford Long of Barrow County, GA, used ether to remove a tumor from a patient’s neck.)

The Barrow County Medical Society Auxiliary proclaimed the day “Doctors’ Day”, which was celebrated by mailing cards to physicians and their wives, and by placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors, including Dr. Long.

The United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day on March 30, 1958. In 1990, legislation was introduced into the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate to establish a National Doctors’ Day. Following overwhelming approval by the House and Senate, then-President George H. W. Bush signed a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. The first National Doctors’ Day was celebrated in 1991.
